Spectacular and distant, lonely and forgotten, Choquequirao (3.085 m) operates on top of an almost impregnable mountain of the province of La Convención, Cusco, so that made for more than 40 years in the last bastion of resistance the Sons of Heaven, who sought refuge within its walls of stone, after the defeat of Manco Inca, the rebel Inca, visiting palaces, temples, two-tier fountain systems, canals, aqueducts, and its lovely terraces "upholstered" with profuse vegetation, a place that is worth the effort. Exhaustion gives way to the magnificence of Choquequirao.

The geographical location is northeast of Cusco between the rivers Apurimac, Urubamba and the majestic Salkantay with a maximum height of 6.271 m and 2.575 m minimum. The range of Vilcabamba offers a unique opportunity for a fascinating walk between a glacial environment, green mountains, bears, condors, tarantulas, etc..This cloud forest region served as a refuge and natural fortress for the resistance movement of sixteenth century Inca XVI, who tried to regain control of Tahuantinsuyo of the Spanish invaders. The customs and clothing typical of the local people reflect a mixture of cultures. Their language and decoration textile Pre-Inca and Inca, give clear evidence of the influence of Quechua. Vilcabamba is also a region where there are concentrations of Pre-Columbian archaeological treasures, including Choquequirao and the famous citadel of Machu Picchu. There is a functioning network of Inca roads connecting the plains of Vitcos, Rosas leg and Espiritu Pampa.
